Mid-Victorian Engraved Silver Coffee Pot

I had the pleasure of restoring a beautifully engraved antique sterling silver coffee pot, crafted in 1866 by the renowned silversmiths Daniel & Charles Houle. Made in London and styled in the distinctive Moresque/Arabesque Oriental tradition, this piece features a hexagonal, panelled body that gracefully tapers into a baluster base. The domed, hinged lid is topped with a cast geometric finial, and a striking high C-scroll handle completes the design. The entire surface is richly chased with scrolling foliage, with each canted panel displaying oval medallions containing intricate leaf motifs.

Maker: Daniel & Charles Houle
Assay Office: London
Year: 1866

Client Concern

The client contacted us with a safety concern, noting:
“The handle seems a bit loose and it is no longer safe to hold. Could you please take a look at it?”

Assessment

Upon examination, I identified a missing pin that had caused the handle to become unstable. Additionally, there are several noticeable small dents and bruises on the body of the coffee pot — signs of age and regular use. The client appreciated the thorough assessment and requested that these issues be addressed during the restoration.

Restoration Process

  • Handle Repair: Secured the loose handle by fitting new, custom-made pins, restoring its strength and functionality.

  • Debruising: Using precision tools and techniques, removed the surface bruises and dents while preserving the original hand-chased engravings.

  • Polishing: As requested, applied a gentle polish to enhance the piece’s natural patina without compromising its antique finish

Restoration and repair costs vary based on the complexity of the work and the time required.
